California is a city in Moniteau County, Missouri, United States. The 2010 census has the population at 4,278. It is the county seat of Moniteau County. California is the third largest city in the Jefferson City, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the largest city in Moniteau County. California is located in central Moniteau County at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Missouri Route 87. North Moreau Creek flows past two miles south of the city.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.36 square miles (8.70 km2), of which 3.35 square miles (8.68 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,278 people, 1,727 households, and 1,096 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,277.0 inhabitants per square mile (493.1/km2). There were 1,909 housing units at an average density of 569.9 per square mile (220.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.3% White, 0.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.4% of the population. There were 1,727 households, of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present.
